I hear so many people make that statement. I realize most are just making a flippant “joke”.
Not paying your taxes, assuming you owe any federal taxes, is a recipe for a whole heap of trouble and expensive if you’re working class. This isn’t VISA where you can basically just ignore the debt for X number of years and then you’re in the clear. The federal government has considerably more options for getting the money owed.
I’m not convinced tax evasion even hurts the government. Taxes gives currency value via scarcity, but currency also gains value through contracts made on that currency. Taxes is just a contract where everyone is automatically enrolled. As long as there are enough other contracts operating on the currency and the contracts are still enforced, the currency will retain value. The government also isn’t at risk of going broke since it can literally print it’s currency then increase interest rates to stop inflation.
Still hurts you of-course, but it’s a meaningless sacrifice.
Yeah its a good thing that never in history have governments, sometimes of the largest economies and some the most capable of projecting force, its a good thing that never in history have governments collapsed, having been replaced whole cloth.
Its a good thing thats never happened, otherwise your sarcasm could be mistaken for a deep, toxic, counter productive cynicism.
China does it ever couple hundred years, the Roman Empire by its end in the 1400s had been effectively reorganized dozens of times and could hardly be considered the same state, Britain and France more or less collapsed to their core territories by the 60s, the Spanish and Portuguese Empires imploded economically before being picked apart by the Dutch and newly independent colonies. I could go on but those are the big ones where the empires in question had notable territory loss or effectively reorganized in totality, there’s a couple smaller examples like with Sweden becoming Insular or how Islam transitioned from an imperial institution in a lot of ways into a religious one, but those examples rarely are as impressive or went on for centuries without any real turning points.
Oh I don’t know. Maybe just pick any of them. Perhaps most recently, that one weird event which resulted in the formation of the nationstates Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
Bro it’s every government that ever existed before the current ones. He’s not referring to specific historical events. He’s referring to the entire history of humanity. It’s like asking “which people” when someone says “people have died.”
I think there is just an expectation of a certain level of political and historical literacy when you are having a conversation in a news or politics forum.
Eventually the IRS would garnish a person’s wages, yes? For someone self employed, that wouldn’t exactly be a viable option I suppose. They could put a hold on someone’s bank accounts and whatnot if garnishment isn’t possible.
You’d need to transition to a cash based lifestyle to circumvent this. Difficult to do in today’s world.
Yes. Wage garnishment is one tool they have. Granted, debt collectors have that tool as well, it’s just that the federal government can do it much more quickly and easily.
I’ve had 2 family members, that I know of, over the years who decided they weren’t going to pay their federal taxes because they didn’t like who the president was. Both of them regretted it.
Well it looks like I’m not going to be able to pay my taxes this year.
I know you said this as a joke but there are tons of legal ways to avoid taxes.
-Contribute to a retirement account or health savings account
-Create a business around one of your hobbies and deduct all your expenses for that hobby
-Purchase certain treasuries or municipal bonds
-Bribe a government official

Just ask for an extension you can ask six months at a time if you dont owe more than a few thousand they wont mind it’ll get autoapproved
government can’t come for you if your tear it down and build a new one
And unicorns can’t fart if you steal their butts!

I’m curious, which historical events are you referring to?

So fun that people down vote legitimate questions.

I’m assuming that’s people who don’t realize that you’re not unicorn dude

Yeah it was a flippant joke 😭 although Trump made some pretty big cuts to the IRS
