He instructed the governmental oversight committee to study the implications of adding to Texas “one or more contiguous counties of New Mexico” and the process to do so, after welcoming a proposal out of New Mexico to allow its counties to band together and secede. While the Texas-New Mexico boundary is unlikely to shift next year, the proposal will likely appeal to pro-secessionists in Texas, some of whom are among Burrows’ conservative skeptics.
For a while now I have been hearing a lot of quiet and not-so-quiet talk about people fed up with the One Star State and leaving Texas, or at least working toward that goal. There are a lot of great people there, as in every state, and I don’t want to bash the ones trying to make it better, but for some the pros are strongly outweighed by the cons.
It’s hot and expensive and corrupt and has a governor who brings to mind that tired old poem An Ode to a Tree every time I have to hear about some other anti-human act of cruelty he’s pushing forward, and a lieutenant governor who said grandparents should be willing to die of covid to save the economy for their children.
And then there’s all the anti-immigrant, anti-women, anti-healthcare, anti-LGBTQ+, anti-DEI, anti-voting, anti-democracy, pro-hate, pro-culture war, pro-pseudo-religious horseshit they’re up to, including praying for the death of an actual Christian candidate because he’s telling people there’s actually a difference between real Christianity and this twisted political version they’re pushing.
Oh, and Texas gets hurricanes AND twisters too, forgot about that. And Ted “Cancun” Cruz, but never at the same time: that’s his Superman power. You’ll never see him in Texas at the same time as a natural disaster or destructive weather. I could think of more, but that’s Texas right now, most of it having to do with its own insanely corrupt governance. New Mexico has problems too, but not like Texas.
So I already know this is a scam. No one in their right mind is running toward Texas. No one.
Has anyone asked New Mexico what they think of this plan, or is that buried with the Epstein files now?
Has anyone asked New Mexico what they think of this plan, or is that buried with the Epstein files now?
Funny you should mention the two in the same breath…
New Investigation Launched into Epstein’s 7,600-Acre Zorro Ranch. Here’s What We Know
They probably just want Eddy County because of the Navajo Refinery that refines a bunch of the oil out of west Texas.
This will never happen for the simple reason that Texas’s outline is too damn iconic.
Ha! Failed due to branding.
Having read the article, I like the notion of some counties being able to redraw state lines with some limitations. There’s parts of states that feel like parts of other states and letting local folks choose their government was kind of the point.
No. U-haul is a thing for this very reason.
I don’t even like imaginary lines in the dirt to begin with so you’re gonna have to make a better argument than U Haul
State boundaries make sense in that if there were none everyone would be represented by a single entity. They have to exist at some level for that reason.
Okay but why do states exist in the first place.
Also: Consent of the governed
For the same reason that countries exist. Everyone should have the right for representation. The US is a big place. It needs to be broken into individual locations so that citizens are better locally represented. Whether or not the seemingly arbitrary lines make sense is a different debate, but have some level of boundaries should exist due to the size of this country.
“Lines in the dirt exist because we imagine they’re there”
Still not convinced.
You haven’t provided any counter. I’ve told you why they should exist. You’ve said they shouldn’t with no reason. What is your better solution that will be better and why?
Fuck off, we should go back to being Mexico first.
Too bad, Lincoln’s post-Civil-War supreme court preemptively torpedoed this one. It’s been ruled that you need permission from the rest of the union to secede and can’t do it unilaterally, even through the union was formed in the first place via unilaterally seceding from the British empire.
…Because that makes sense.
Anyhoo, even if these dingbats succeed according to their own metrics the federal government won’t let them go. So have fun with that. Not that I trust any of said dingbats to have actually studied any history on the matter whatsoever, or on any other matter while we’re at it.
They aren’t going anywhere. As a part of the USA it’s blood in / blood out.
This is about a New Mexico county’s secession to become apart of Texas, not secession from the US.
Conservatives know secession from the country is illegal so their politicians find a slightly greyer area - states seceding to other states - to start planting the seed into their base’s heads. They then cultivate the plant as vigorously as possible and by the time someone looks up the law, it’s too late - the idea has been thoroughly rooted. This is one of their most time-honored strategies.
Then Houston joins California and out comes the surprised Pikachu.
I’m positive that’s verboten as well. The constitution is quite clear that this requires the approval of Congress.
Yes, which i assume will be the finding of whoever was assigned to layout the process
No, they would be apart from the US, but joined with Texas.
So tired of nut jobs and grifters. So very very tired.
This is what happens when a lawless multi-convicted felon and rapist, suspected (but definitely) pedophile, racist piece of shit is in charge. It emboldens the rest of them to do absolutely stupid shit to their country and state.
