Democrat Emily Gregory narrowly won the special election for the district Tuesday night, The Associated Press projects. Trump carried the area in 2024.
Democrat Emily Gregory won a special election Tuesday for the Florida state House district that includes Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, flipping the seat from Republican control, The Associated Press projects.
Gregory beat Republican Jon Maples, whom Trump endorsed, in the race for a seat that has been vacant since August, when Mike Caruso resigned from the Legislature and was appointed Palm Beach County clerk.
Gregory had 51% of the vote to 49% for Maples with all precincts reporting.
Democrats have performed well in special elections during Trump’s second term, with the party pointing to those results as a sign of strength ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Florida’s 87th District is the 10th GOP-held state legislative seat Democrats have flipped around the country since Trump took office again last year. Republicans have not flipped any Democratic state legislative seats during that time.
demolish it
mar-a-lago’s still around? I thought someone had planted a bunch of bombs and blown it up. Not that im suggesting plant a bunch of bombs at mar-a-lago and blow it up. Its just that I thought someone had planted a bunch of bombs around mar-a-lago and blown it up.

I think it says somthing that in the last general election, this seat went republican 59.5% to 40.5%.
These aren’t Republicans voting Democrat, they are far too brainwashed for that.
What you’re seeing is Republicans staying home & the Independents abandoning the fascist GOP.
Getting Independents wins elections. How it’s always been and how it always will be until we get rid of FPTP.
I think that’s partially, perhaps mostly, true, but I think a lot of MAGAs are just fed up. He’s going to try to make a case for a third term, and there will be a lot of MAGA resistance. We are at the stage where they are starting to think about a post-Trump MAGA, and he’s starting to be a liability.
Right now, MAGA is a classic cult of personality, and they have to figure out how to transition it into a viable political party with the same blind cult-like loyalty, but without the “personality.”
If they want MAGA to continue beyond his term, and become a viable political party separate from him, they can’t allow it to get so bad that it eventually gets prohibited as a National Security Threat (which should absolutely happen). They will want to mainstream it, and that means avoiding Trump’s worst instincts.
A current example is how he is losing his precious SAVE Act, because his own MAGAs won’t pass it. I’m sure part of it is because it is stupid and short-sighted, but part of it probably because they don’t want to do anything that will make it easier for him to continue in office beyond his term. They’ve had enough.
but I think a lot of MAGAs are just fed up.
Yes, hence why they are staying home. They are too brainwashed to break their programming & vote for anyone aside from another GOP scumbag. They will also vote for JD Vance in lockstep in 2028.
The independents however, are done. That’s why you’re seeing huge swings in “blood red” districts in TX & LA. Turns out appeasing the most deplorable 25% of the electorate and screwing over the other 75% after telling them bold-faced lies doesn’t get people to the polls to vote for you.
There are more self-described Independents than either party. Nobody ever wins with just the votes of their base. They HAVE to win the Indy vote, too, and that’s much more difficult. Piss them off, and you’re toast.
She a real democrat or a republican that ran as democrat? I see you Florida.
Goes to show that even in Florida they’re sick of Trump and the Gross Old Pedophile party.
The don’t care about the diddling. It got personal when gas hit $5.
It doesn’t matter. Florida used to be evenly split, but Trump made Florida into MAGA HQ, and a million MAGA Traitors/Pedophiles moved here and skewed the entire electorate right. Besides, Florida elections have been fully rigged since 2000. No Democrat wins unless the MAGAs allow it, in a few districts, just for appearances.
The last Democratic stronghold in Florida, the Central Region around Orlando and the I-4 corridor, has been under attack by DeSantis for years, yanking duly elected politicians out of office for lame reasons, and replacing them with his own hand-picked stooges.
One replaced prosecutor, Monique Worrell, was yanked soon after her election, and replaced with a stooge, who did a terrible job, so she ran for re-election, and not only won with 2/3 of the pissed off voters, but DeSatan’s private stooge lost his own primary against another Republican, tried to run as an Independent, and got crushed in embarrassing and humiliating fashion.
He’s also replaced the local sheriff and police chief with guys who have long histories in immigration enforcement, in one of the biggest middle-class Hispanic populations in the nation.
The local sheriff got arrested for supposedly acting as protection for a “massive” $20 million gambling operation, that was so secret they registered their corporation with the state, had a “casino” full of colorful lighted gambling machines behind plate glass windows that were totally visible to the most high traffic main drag through town, and put lots of videos on Instagram and other Social Media. Clearly they weren’t worried about keeping it quiet, almost as though they thought it was LEGAL. And why wouldn’t it be? They have operations like that all over Florida!
But they arrested the sheriff, letting one of the local news channels in on it, so there would be footage. I was already suspicious about the entire thing, then the absolute corruption of it was driven home when I was watching the breathless pearl-clutching coverage of this MASSIVE $20 MILLION GAMBLING OPERATION® and they cut to a commercial…for the Hard Rock Casino, the massive multi-BILLION dollar operation 45 minutes up the highway. Nobody is gasping and pearl-clutching over them.
Then they kept the sheriff locked up, and denied him bail, then they locked up his wife, and denied her bail, as if they were child rapists and murderers. That meant that they couldn’t tell their side of the story, while DeSatan and his operatives were spewing their propaganda on the news all day, every day.
Very little of this was covered in Florida news, other than locally, and what there was was definitely from the administration’s side. I’ve seen and heard literally NOTHING from any national media about DeSatan’s attacks on Central Florida, not even talk about him removing fairly elected Democrats, and replacing them with his hand-picked loyalists. The Democratic Party certainly didn’t come to their defense.
This should be one of the biggest stories in the nation, and literally nobody outside of Central Florida knows it’s going on, and it’s been happening for YEARS.
Not sick enough, one 51% of the vote. That means half the people there still like it.
True but what were the numbers last time?
Last time around this seat went republican 59.5% to 40.5%.
yay democrats, sure is better than voting third party
Yup, first rule of voting: Unless you have a Fetterman situation, dem >> 3rd party > no vote >>> repub
Unfortunately US election system is fucked, which means by voting a third party you just help the republicans to win
I am pretty sure repu licans also claim a vote for a third party is a vote for democrats
That’s fucking hilarious lol
He even voted by mail for this one too, so he’s just going to run his usual bullshit of it all being rigged
It really sucks to have a shitty neighbor.
It sucks even worse to have a shitty leader.
Who would’ve thunk these things still matter? Not billionaires, that’s who.
God I hope this is a sign for the midterms.
It’s one sign, but there have been many others. Something like 28 MAGA seats have flipped to Democrats in special elections, while no Democrat seats have flipped. MAGA can’t buy a win.
Yesterday, the Dems flipped Trump’s own district. Some are saying it was indies, not MAGAs, or the MAGAs didn’t vote, or nobody votes in these special elections, yadda-yadda, but the bottom line is:
Trump’s own home district flipped from MAGA to Democrat, in a decisive win in which his own wealthy neighbors voted AGAINST him. That’s YUGE.
Whether it’s by an inch or by a mile, flipping is flipping.
I don’t see any republican ever voting democrat, most of them seem too far gone into the echo chambers, which just keep growing and growing as they consolidate the media.
The only thing that may still break that path is the Iran war jacking gas prices so high that a substantial number of MAGAs abstain out of rage, otherwise goodbye America.
I’m wondering if poly market has odds for the US breaking up like the USSR in the next decade
Who cares what a bunch of stupid addicts think?
Just keep in mind, Trump legitimately won 2024 and Biden legitimately won 2020. My parents are die hard republicans and will never vote for a democrat. They have not voted for president in the last 3 elections. That’s probably the best we can hope for. Especially in a midterm.
Political parties across the world have worked very hard to ensure that people consider them to be an intrinsic part of their identity, rather than a choice.
lol
I just mailed my overseas vote for my state’s primary. Super red and heavily gerymandered, but not much else I can do. We at least had one progressive on the dem ballot whose site (at least until recently) said “Fuck Ice” so that’s hopeful.
Harris won this
districtcounty by .7% in the presidential election. This candidate won by a little more, but special elections / off year elections, the party out of power usually gets a little bump.Looks like this candidate won by 2.3%. So good sign, but you’d think that wars ICE murders would be worth more than 1.6%
Edit: county, not district.
Harris didn’t win this state house district she won Palm Beach County.
Look at the map, This Water front owning class isn’t going to be bothered either way. They have personal cell number to get their undocumented hires back or with just pay a little extra until MAGA is ousted.
Good point. District 87 is smaller.
That said, the former GOP incumbent won by less than 40 votes. It’s a very purple district.
Everything was redistricted in 2022 to attempt to keep a Republican majority. Not sure what District & election was that close, I’m not seeing it. Even if its purple there was an attmpt to gerrymander and this election broke it.
District 88 is Dem and it does appear they stole from that and attempted to route Palm Beach in to dilute it. It might be even more interesting of a win than I thought.
Not why the article said Trump won by 11% in 2024. Looks like you’re right though.
Let’s see: There’s them saying ICE will be at polling stations, there’s the SAVE act, there’s the war in Iran which Trump believes can stop elections, there’s always the classic Insurrection Act and Martial Law, there’s them claiming 2020 was stolen and therefore federalizing the election process. And then the redistricting, ending Mail In Voting, gerrymandering, threats, Dominion voting machines now being owned by a MAGA former election official.
All of that and people still think we’re having free elections?
I agree there is a lot to be worried about. But at the least it’s a good sign that the voters are turning out against Trump in a major way.
I’m getting tired of hearing this doomer sentiment. What’s your ultimate goal? Are you trying to convince people that it’s a lost cause to vote so you can tell us, “I told you so!” after the fact?
Apologies if I sound like I’m coming off doomer. I’m actually really not, I actually have a lot of hope and faith in the people, even if it seems hopeless right now. I think we get through this in community, mutual aid, resistance, and withholding our participation from the system.
I don’t think voting is going to change anything, not really… I still vote because I think it’s dumb not to, but I don’t expect to undo the master’s system with the master’s tools.
If you think pulling the lever to change this very system is not going to work then you are de facto doomering.
If you’re talking about ‘undoing the system’ and not doing anything about it, then you’re just being edgy.
Nope! That’s why we need everyone who is able armed and doing their duty protecting the polls from, uh, stormy weather
Citizens militia y’all
Based AF, I love defending myself from stormy weather. You know I got that semiauto umbrella on me, and several more for extra rainy days.
No, it’s obvious that the republicans are going to try to manipulate the outcome in their favor.
However, if the swing against them is large enough they won’t be able to push the needle far enough back their way.
I think if the push against them is too strong, they’ll just go full dictator and enact autocracy. I mean we’re quickly marching there anyways but they have to go through some other steps before they just rid of Congress and the SC, though they might keep vestiges as an appeasement for the dumbest of the dumb.
I think we all know where this is going. And I want everrone who reads this to know, I am not an accelerationist and I am not giddy about this. But I don’t think there’s a peaceful way out of this, and that means a lot of people are going to die, like a lot, probably a lot of my loved ones and community, as well as potentially me. I’m not planning on sitting this one out on the sidelines. It’s either me and everyone I love in concentration camps/dead without a fight, or going down fighting and striving for a better world.
I just really don’t see many other options besides decades of resistance and guerilla warfare, which we don’t have the time for. In a few decades Earth will be so much worse due to an accelerated climate crisis. And this regime has shown itself to be part of a global threat, installing far right governments, or converting them alongside Israel and Russia. We literally do not have the commodity to not fight back with every fiber of being, when that time comes.
If climate change is already looking bad, it won’t just be the US pumping out full throttle carbon emissions, it will be most of the world. And yes, what we’ve done so far is laughable and pitiful, but imagine a world where green energy is banned for oil profits, and governments haven’t just stopped caring a little bit, but are actively determined to burn as much oil and coal as possible.
The population isn’t ready for armed resistance. I doubt they ever will be.
This is PROOF that ALLOWING Trump’s Agenda is GOOD for Democrats!
-Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries and Fetterman!
I mean, it is from one perspective.
A lot of the population seems to be unable to perceive the obvious results from certain policies. Actually having it happen and dealing with consequences is the only way they seem to realize what they were told would happen was true.
The dominoes are beginning to fall
She performed 1.6% better than Harris, who also won that district. It’s a bump, but I’d feel a lot more comfortable if wars, ICE raids, expensive healthcare, election rigging and inflation was worth more than a 1.6% bump.
Especially since the party in power usually has lower turnout in off year elections.
It’s important to take into account that this was a special election. These kinds of elections usually have higher GOP turnout than Dems because old racists ain’t got shit else to do.
Not saying I disagree — I mean, my view is that his claims of election rigging alone should really have made Trump not politically-viable for any voter already — but setting that aside, it’s a situation where the resident of not merely the state but also the congressional district is President, and you’d expect that to bump in the positive direction, opposing the negative bump from incumbent President.
Trump’s the kind of huy who will just walk in and kick over the entire domino run and brag about it though.
Which is why I will be so thrilled when he dies. The Nazi defies odds by possessing literally zero redeeming qualities. He’s every single fucking thing wrong with humanity rolled into one Frankenstein’s monster of amorality. He’s the closest thing you can ever get to showing a myth like the anti-Christ is based on a real phenomenon. Which is something I don’t necessarily understand, but it’s basically “if someone is the right kind of evil piece of shit, many people will think they’re God”.
Each one is a battle. The illusion of momentum is dangerous.
And yet people need an iota of hope after ten years of hearing about and talking about the worst president in American history. Someone who truly deserves to be compared to Hitler. Yeah, we’ve (reasonably) been so depressed about this shit we fucking need the tiniest sliver of hope. Is it really that dangerous to have any?
One theory for why Trump won is that he was so ridiculous that a lot of democrats thought there was no way he could win, so they stayed home on election day. I don’t know if that’s true exactly, but I know that democracy requires participation and traditionally the more people who actually vote in an election, the greater likelihood of a democratic win.
So yeah, I stand by my caution against complacency. No election is going to win itself, or win other elections, as implied by the dominoes metaphor. Our country will continue deteriorating until people who care actually fight, for real, in a prolonged, sustainable way. The other side never stops fighting.
I agree. I’m just not sure celebrating one small win counts as complacency.
Edit: according to the angry downvoter, constant rage for 12+ years without any break is the only thing that keeps one from being “complacent”. It sure has helped us so far. We all know that trump won in 2024 not by mobilizing racists and confusing struggling people. Not that, it was because we laughed at some trump memes after he lost in 2020.
I still say he could never win. No one in their right mind would vote for him. Any party that nominated him can only blame themselves for losing. But of course I voted. Always vote.
And he’s been even worse than the unelectable fooli thought he was, so WTF, people. But always vote
