In the poll from The Washington Post, 47 percent of respondents said “Trump and Republicans in Congress” are “mainly responsible for the federal government partially shutting down,” while 30 percent pinned the blame on “Democrats in Congress” for the shutdown.
In the survey, 66 percent of respondents said they are either “very” or “somewhat” concerned over the shutdown, while 34 percent said they are “not too” or “not at all” concerned.
The Post poll took place Wednesday, featuring 1,010 people and a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.

That’s because there are no real Republicans anymore— they’re all going to vote blue now if they aren’t a MAGA sycophant, and those numbers in REAL life are shrinking, not growing. Real people are fed up with this bullshit.
There is hope then that common sense will ultimately make a comeback. Media companies…lay off for a bit okay?
Mike Johnson literally shut the government down days before the vote on the funding bill to prevent the discharge petition that would force the release of all the Epstein files.
Anyone who blames democrats at this point might need to have their voter registration cards revoked. They don’t deserve to be treated like adults any longer.
The percentage of Americans that aren’t potatoes still slightly higher than the percentage that are.
23% is unsure or has no opinion? Holy shit that’s huge.
It is shocking how many people have absolutely no fucking clue what is going on.
To be fair there is an absolute fuck ton of shit going on and it’s nearly impossible to keep track of all of the bull shit. This is, of course, by design but it’s working to perfection. There’s just a maelstrom of frustrating things going on and stuff starts to slip by unnoticed more and more.
To your point tho, there is a crazy amount of people that don’t know of any of it at all. Which is almost impressive at this point.
I mean, I also wonder how many of that 23% are scared of ending up on an enemies list or some shit if they say the wrong thing to the wrong person right now
Funny thing about fascism is, if you are worried about being a target of them, you already are.
True. But you also don’t even have to be aware. Fascism is self destructive. It always needs a new target. The only requirement is the target is not/no longer a part of the current definition of the in group.
See what’s happening to the ADL right now for an object example.
I am right near the top of their list
They’ve got a registry for people with autism like me. But it’s okay, they would never use it for anything untoward like eugenics.
Surely they would not go after a disabled autistic trans women!
Add in socialist and dark skin, and I’m sure they’d drone strike her
They need to sack the fuck up
I remember as a child hearing stats about what percentage of American adults could not name the current President, and I think I had some amount of disbelief. I mean, you’d think it would be near-zero. Then you factor in people that are extremely stupid or mentally disabled in some way and give some grace there. In any case, now that I’m an adult, I’m no longer a disbeliever in so many people being so very ignorant.
My boss says he deliberately puts head In dirt to keep sane.
I’d say almost everyone here has a clue what is going on and everyone here is really unhappy about it.
That said, I’d probably say “yeah I dunno” to a pollster.
Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised. I know quite a few people, including my wife who actively do not want to hear any information about politics for their mental health. It’s enough in my family that I keep up-to-date on it to be aware of what’s going on and can notify her of anything super important to our health and safety, but if my wife was as terminally online as I am, she would spiral into a mental health chasm relatively quickly.
She’s a physician and she already deals with enough BS out of health and human services and her patients dealing with the barrage of information that anything additional is just overwhelming.
People have lives to live outside of following politics on the internet.
Whodathunk?
It’s America. People are stuck in their own little hamster wheels of production and consumption. That’s a feature not a bug.
Yeah, how dare adults live their lives instead of focusing on something they have no control over?
They should be spending hours every day on these forums so they can feel like they’re having an impact even though nothing is changing.
Dude. We’re actively heading towards Nazi germany style fascism. It’s far past the point where people can be forgiven for ignoring what’s happening especially those that voted for this. So many republicans are saying things about not knowing it would end up like this when they had their whole fucking playbook readable online.
I mean, the cold, hard truth is that we’re all pretty powerless in this situation.
It’s what we get for funneling as much power as possible to as few people as possible. The most abusive among us have the most control.
Aside from terrorism, there really isn’t anything the average joe can do besides look out for themselves and their loved ones.
As soon as we start threatening those in power, they spend a little bit more of our money to convince us that they’re right and we’re wrong.
Well, that’s good. A whole lot of the fucking media has not been much help, that’s for sure.
And I bet that 34 percent are the same knuckle-draggers that think the Big Gubbermint never did them no good anyhow, even if very many of them desperately depend on that very government…the “small government” propaganda is pervasive and it fucking works.
I’m sure almost everyone knows someone in their lives like this - they may even work directly for the government or directly for a major company that relies entirely on government and they will still be deep in denial and vote for Republicans reliably and preach the gospel of “small government” and bitch about people “on the dole”, etc…
I remember asking someone that worked for Raytheon who was going on like this - “don’t you work for the government, in truth?” This almost caused him to short out, he got so angry. Pretty simple question, really. Why so angry? He went on and on - “it’s not government, it’s the private sector!, etc.” for a while, and I let him. Then I just asked him if he really thought Raytheon would survive without any government contracts. Also, why did he need a GOVERNMENT security clearance to do his job? What’s that all about?
I could tell it really hit home. I mean, it’s fair to ask, though. These kind of people are the types that will just start up with this dogma, completely unprompted, and I don’t really know what they expect? People either getting triggered? Or giving a high-five and a “megadittoes!!!” whoop? But then they cannot field the most simple of questions that point out the disconnect…
The better headline is that only 30 percent blame Dems. That tells me that while many in MAGA won’t admit to anyone that Reps did it, they aren’t fooled into believing Dems did it.
An additional interesting poll would be how many Americans support the shut-down.
It’s probably tricky to question that. Nobody wants the government shut down. But we’re here cause somebody isn’t doing the right thing. So far the majority is blaming Trump, which gives Dems more leverage.
Give it a few days and Fox will reprogram them to shift the blame. It’s a tale repeated ad infinitum.
It doesn’t take much.
Nobody wants the government shut down
I mean, I personally am in favor of keeping the government shutdown until every ICE agent who’s missing paychecks because of it has to quit and finds a different job, but admittedly opinion polls say that’s probably still an outlier opinion at this point
I thought I read that ICE has an exception to operate and be paid.
Nope, “ICE agents also go without pay.” (arc). The exception ICE gets is that they have to keep working while they’re not being paid.
Okay, thanks. So officially no pay. That’s good. Though my tinfoil hat is telling me billionaire funds might float their way to keep the onslaught uninterrupted.
The people that cut those checks get furloughed as well.
However, this admin doesn’t give a shit about legality & ICE quite obviously doesn’t either so they will likely be paying them under the table.
Yes, my thoughts as well.
Yeah, but that’s different than saying you want the government shut down as a blanket statement. You want the government open so long as it’s not enabling an authoritarian regime. But so long is that’s not possible, shut it down.
It’s probably easier to ask “who do you blame for the shutdown” and assume it’s the same people.
Along with all the other affected employees…
Plenty of Americans have been asked to sacrifice more for less worthy causes over the years
They got $50k sign on. They started with a years earnings. Wonder if the motivation for that is a situation exactly like this?
I don’t think this administration plans stuff out that much, I think they did that just to burn up as much of the taxpayer money they got given in Trump’s budget bill as quickly as possible.
Also, I just did some quick searching on that and it seems like they only started saying they’d do that sign on bonus at the very end of July, so a) not confirmed anyone’s actually gotten it yet, b) what about all the ICE agents who started before this bonus?
You’re right. I’m giving the clowns too much credit.
Tons of MAGA simps and the Trump administration want the government shut down. It gives them another cover story for further firing of federal employees and withholding payments to programs they don’t like since their initial wave is getting slowed down by the courts.
Yes, Taco explicitly said he wants to do irreversible damage to this country under cover of a shutdown and then of course, blame the Democrats.
Given Murc’s Law, I’m sure the tankies, the centrists, plenty of Democrats, and of course the goddamned “liberal media” will give a great big assist to that blaming. That’s in addition to, of course, the Republican Noise Machine…
I want the government shut down.
That’s because it is on the republicans.
Just because the Republicans control both houses, and because the Republican president ordered Republicans in the legislature not to even meet to negotiate with the Democrats, and because the Republicans could easily avoid the shutdown by continuing the ACA subsidies that even over half of their own base wants, and because the Republican president was giddy about the possibility of a shutdown, somehow everyone is in a rush to blame Republicans for the shutdown that the Republicans almost unilaterally caused.
