A white Connecticut police officer who fatally shot a Black man in a mental health crisis was fired Friday as public outrage grew over videos showing he began shooting 30 seconds after arriving at the scene, where other officers had spent several minutes de-escalating the situation.

The officer’s firing came a day after the Rev. Al Sharpton and noted civil rights lawyer Ben Crump spoke at the funeral of the man who was killed, Steven Jones.

Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam said he fired Officer Joseph Magnano because of what he saw on police body camera footage of the Feb. 27 killing.

The videos, released earlier this month by the state’s inspector general, showed that Jones was was on a city street holding a large knife, but that the first group of police officers who arrived backpedaled to keep their distance from him, spoke to him kindly, and seemed to have gotten him to calm down.

Out of a cannon? Into the sun?

Or just to take a job in the next town over?

Oh he was fired? So it’s kind of wrong to shoot people to death that have been calmed down?
But not wrong enough that the asshole was arrested for cold blooded murder!!!

The local police union president, James Rutkauski, defended Magnano, saying his actions were justified and in line with department policies.

USA is a criminal sociopathic society, and the police union is an example of that.

Nope sorry, maybe by American standards, but American society is literally sociopathic. With a majority of the population supporting sociopathy, as could be seen in the biggest poll that exist for USA, which is the presidential election.

Examples of American society being sociopathic is 3 times and you’re out, lack of universal healthcare, death penalty.
These things are all illegal in EU and other more civilized countries.
Americans are indoctrinated to see freedom and money as the highest achievable goals in life. So much so, that Americans elected an obvious malignant narcissist for president, key word here is obvious! And please note that a malignant narcissist is worse than sociopath and psychopath.
This could only happen because Americans have been brainwashed to see the selfishness of a narcissist as an expression of the ultimate personal freedom without conscience or any other inhibitions.
And the same way they see multi billionaires as accomplished, when their riches are inherited and based on insane privileges, and disregard for other people, like is the case for Elon Musk and Trump.
So in American society narcissism and greed are widely seen as virtues.

I know there are lots of good Americans, even exceptional Americans, but you are deluding yourself if you think you are a majority.
Electing Bush twice was not an accident, it was a symptom. Electing Trump twice was also a symptom, and it showed it was worse than I thought before Trump was elected the first time.

The sociopathy permeates American society like a cancer in a body. Not all cells are sick, like not all Americans are sociopaths. But there are so many that are sick, that it makes the society as a whole sick.

You raise some good points. Maybe I should have said “most of us Californians are normal” instead. I’m from the SF bay area but I’ve been to MAGA territory.

California is better than average, but California was among the states that started the 3 times and you are out, and California doesn’t have universal healthcare. Los Angeles has also had major police brutality problems. So even California has major problems.
But absolutely, in a country descending into fanaticism and madness, California is among the better states, and AFAIK SF is among the better places in California.
I visited LA and SF in the 80’s and there was much to love, especially about SF, unfortunately in many ways it’s been going the wrong way since then for USA.
One thing I noticed when I spoke with local workers, and I was shocked to learn, was that overtime without pay was a very widespread phenomenon. Here that is considered exploitation, and is completely unacceptable. Also the lack of holidays is crazy.

I don’t think most Americans realize the depth of the sociopathic mindset ingrained in American society. And that even “normal” people have been conditioned to accept.

      Different state?

He’ll have to look maybe two counties over. Probably just gonna go to the county on the other side of the one he lives in.

Trivia: Counties don’t do anything up here. I don’t think a Sheriff can even pull you over for speeding. It’s mostly a court and prison district thing.
