They’re pretty good, honestly. Of course they are, how can fried potatoes not be? Since they’re probably not found in your grocer’s freezer in your country, there are online recipes to make homemade ones.

However , they’re popular because of the pre-made convenience. People also make casserole or “hot dish” using them.

Tater-tot casserole is a favorite “comfort food” in our house.

(preheat your oven to 375F) Use any meat you wish, but pre-brown it in a frying pan (lightly salt/pepper). I usually dice the meat into 3-4" cubes. It isn’t necessary to cook all the way through, but to sear and partially cook the meat. Once done, place in the bottom of a 13x9" pan. Mix 3-4 cans of creamy soup (we use mushroom) with one packet of Onion soup mix. Pour the creamy mix over the meat. It should fill all the gaps between. Pour a healthy amount of tots over the top and press down slightly so they are embedding into the soup/meat mix. Bake for about an hour.

We also add broccoli (into the soup/meat mix) if we have it or whatever suits you. Bacon. Whatever. You can also add cheese on top if you wish. Make it your own dish! I’d love to hear variations of this.

Everyone has explained the name, but, no one has explained the why…

They take the potatoes that won’t make good fries or can’t really be sold well as regular potatoes. Parboil them, rice them, form them into those nuggets then deep fry them.

The ricing causes a tremendous amount of surface area, and they get super crunchy on the outside. They’re relatively cheap because they can be made with imperfect potatoes. So they’re a significant food staple in school cafeterias.
