More military action in the middle east is a ubiquitously unpopular platform, and wars that are perceived as pointless have almost always been devastating to ruling party / presidential support. Further, the US military has been struggling to hit its recruitment numbers for years now, and this isn’t going to help that. It also stretches the government’s attention even further, and makes it more vulnerable to dissident activity at home.
