“The Golden State and Canada have always had so much in common,” Newsom said in a video posted on X, formerly Twitter. “Sure, you-know-who is trying to stir things up back in D.C., but don’t let that ruin your beach plans.”

“Sure, you might get thrown into an immigration jail with no blanket, toilet paper, or heat. Or medical care, or any kind of transparency about when if ever you might get out. But don’t let that ruin your beach plans. Come anyway. Don’t call me if something happens to you.”

Looking more at the story, I think Newsweek just shouldn’t be allowed as a source here. They have basically become tabloid trash, and I think the entire point of this story is to normalize the stuff Trump is doing and make it sound like business as usual, as well as to make Gavin Newsom sound kind of goofy and selfish and put up a slightly unflattering picture of him.

There are other politicians who are doing sit-ins, leading protests, going to El Salvador to try to rescue our people from what Trump is doing to them. More appropriate responses. I’m not saying Gavin Newsom is not doing anything like that just because this story doesn’t mention it and emphasizes some trivial stuff, but bottom line, I don’t like the story. Maybe assigning some blame to Newsweek instead of Newsom is a better way to look at it, though.
