President Donald Trump has warned the U.K. and France that the “U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore,” as he vented his frustration over the close allies’ refusal to join military action against Iran.

It was good optics indeed. It was also 13 billion over 3 years divided by 17 countries.

The Marshall Plan’s accounting reflects that aid accounted for about 3% of the combined national income of the recipient countries between 1948 and 1951, which means an increase in GDP growth of less than half a percent.

Not zero, for sure. But far cry from “lots”

GDP growth of the European Union past year was about 1.5%. I wouldn’t say a 3% of extra “free” money is a negligible amount.

Indeed, the US did not bring trains there where only cows were being bred by farmers, but the influence of the Marshall plan was big in the countries most affected by it. Regardless of what the actual aims and intentions of the plan were.
