Yeah, that’s the nature of mass adoption, is that people you don’t like start coming into the community.

This always happens. A community stays intact so long as it stays niche, but once it reaches mass adoption, that community splinters into smaller communities.

The ‘Linux community’ will eventually cease to exist and will be replaced with communities who use Linux in specific fashions.

Didn’t know this guy before but it really doesn’t matter if he was literally Hitler and decides to start using Linux. It’s an operating system not a club, it really makes no difference. Maybe slightly more moderation for people on linux communities on mainstream platforms (e.g. reddit).

A youtuber with 5 million followers and 5 billion views, and has won “Streamer of the Year” at the streamer awards in the past.

If you’re asking out of genuine curiosity: a youtuber with a lot of influence.

If you’re asking to brag how out of touch you are: someone with more influence than you.

no. but asmongold, even if you dont like him is one of the larger, more influential people out there. Should he be? Is his content that good? Doesn’t matter.

“Who even is that” heavily implies “why should I care” and the answer is: because he has a fanbase of rabid morons incapable of independent thought who will do whatever he says to do. So linux spaces are very likely about to be bombarded with people who hate linux without having ever tried it because asmongold said he didn’t like it, or a bunch of people adopting linux.

It also heavily implies “Im proud of the fact that I dont know who this person is.” Which is just not impressive. “Taylor Swift? Who is that?” indicates you are living under a rock, not that you are cool. And aside from pewdiepie, asmongold is probably one of the youtube gamer names people know.

I’m proud of the fact I don’t know who that is and even more proud that I don’t care if anyone thinks that is not impressive. I hate that I learned who poodiepie is and have yet to meet any fans that weren’t mentally challenged. It is a waste of space in my brain and I would happily live under a rock if it meant I didn’t have to know about the existance of vapid, self-centered, so-called “youtube celebrities”. They add nothing to this world of any value and wouldn’t be missed.

I could see not caring. but actively being proud of it is weird. And asmongold has a lot in common with pewdiepie in that his fans skew heavily towards being morons who will just follow what he says.

And there are plenty of people who are well known who are terrible people. Knowledge isn’t a limited resource, you don’t have to forget something to know that a person is awful. So there is no value in not knowing it.

https://socialblade.com/youtube/handle/asmontv says there’s over thousand youtube channels with more subscribers than him. He might well be large & influential in his niche, but it’s unlikely that people outaide his niche will know who he is. Do you think you’ve heard of 1,000 biggest youtubers whose channels aren’t about things you’re interested in?

Pewdiepie, by comparison, is the 12th most subscribed channel on youtube. I think you’re underestimating how much more famous that makes him with the general public.

With the “general public” yes. Within the computing and gaming space, he’s pretty influential. I realize that “linuxmemes” isn’t about gaming, so there are a lot of non-gamers here but he is a well known name in his niche, which is PC gaming, which is a very relevant niche. It’s not like he’s one of the 1000 youtubers and runs a makeup channel.

Yes, he isn’t universally well known. But given how well known he is in the niche, and how relevant the niche is, and therefore how likely his niche is to translate into linux users or linux haters, it’s extremely relevant to the discussion.

And I’m not saying “everyone should know who Asmongold is!” anyway. I’m merely saying “he’s not irrelevant, and bragging about being out of touch doesn’t make you cool”.

first of all it’s not an accusation, just facts. his twitch channel is just a Nazi hotspot full of misinformation.

second of all, you might wanna reassess rule 6 when it leads to y’all defending Nazis in the name of “defamation”. this is not a court of law, there’s no innocent until proven guilty in the public’s eye.

is this who you wanna bat for?

I’m not defending anyone. There’s enough drama in the F/LOSS space already. I’m trying to keep the community clean of inflammatory remarks that might get out of control while I’m asleep. I’ve seen your comment history – even if you’re stating “just facts”, your temper is going to be an issue.

You might well be right, but this is not a space to discuss politics. Find another community to air out your grievances and I might even join you in shitting on whoever needs shitting on.

His followers are mostly rightwing and gobble up any comment he makes in that direction. I think he himself is a psychopath. And I mean that in the most generous way one could use that description. He doesn’t care about anything. Not himself and certainly not about other people. What little empathy he does have is learned.

Like when he called for the death of Palestinians I genuinely believe that he didn’t know why that’s bad. He learned that by backlash.

He does advocate for general basic income. So that would put him in the leftist corner. But he is quick to generate hate towards groups of people. That can mostly be seen in his comment section.
