Did he literally just cancel it and not put into place any sort of policy or rules in regards to the logistics of doing so or did he actually have a plan to phase it out?
In Canada we have rules in place for things like purchasing in cash and rounding up to the nearest $0.05 or rounding down to the nearest $0.05 depending on what the cost is after taxes but if it’s being paid for by card no rounding is necessary. Are any of those rules in place or even thought about it more deeply than penny needs to go? The article doesn’t mention anything except cancelling it because of money.
Yep. Just like his tariffs. Tariffs that don’t offer alternatives to American businesses are self-inflicted wounds.
Regulating rounding seems like something that needs to be done with a proper law, not an executive act.
So I’m 99% sure he just stopped production and he and his sycophantic merry band didn’t think about the consequences.

If businesses aren’t legally allowed to round up or down, then they might be stuck having to hoard pennies if they become hard to find.
Maybe they could stop pricing things at X.99 and just be honest with us.
And maybe show the price after taxes (i think it was not common in US to do so, could be wrong come from europe)

Have we ever come close to running out of pennies? Given that almost every household in the US has an enormous jar full of them, I’d have to imagine that there isn’t even really a need to produce more pennies in the first place.

But we could easily write all of the good things on a postage stamp with room to spare.

Is there a law saying that companies can round up or down to the nearest nickel? Or do they just assume every business will still have access to pennies?
the cfpb is gone. no need to bother with that. all prices will be rounded up to the nearest ten now.
It says nothing about removing pennies from circulation. They’re just going to stop making new ones.
