I would classify a municipal public meeting as a public event. In my municipality they do a pledge at school committee and council meetings; both of those are public and it’s not an uncommon practice.

well it beats the lords prayer, thats what they say in red states. (thats a joke… I think)
The pledge is still said at many local governmental functions in the US. Both my city and county councils do it before each public meeting.
