Iran’s foreign minister announced Friday that passage for all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz is completely open following a ceasefire agreement reached in Lebanon yesterday, but President Donald Trump said the U.S. naval blockade on Iran will remain in place until a deal with Tehran is struck.
“The Strait of Hormuz is completely open and ready for business and full passage,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “But the naval blockade will remain in full force and effect as it pertains to Iran, only, until such time as our transaction with Iran is 100% complete.”
Trump said he expects the process to go “very quickly,” adding that most of the points have already been negotiated. He later said Iran with the help of the U.S., has removed or is in the process of removing all sea mines it had placed in the strait.
So we’ve reached the point where Iran is trying to open the strait of Hormuz to ship traffic but the United States is blockading it.

Standard marine protection and indemnity insurance policies exclude wartime coverage, stating: “In the event of war or war-like conditions between any of the following states: The United Kingdom, the United States of America, France, the Russian Federation, the People’s Republic of China, the insurance against war perils shall automatically terminate.”
It might be that whether-or-not the US is involved determines whether shipowners or insurers are on the hook for a ship getting shot at.
Though…reading it over, maybe it’s only if it’s specifically one of those fighting another of them.

You’re being generous if you think Trump can count that high.
I mean, the inputs into his decisions are simple, but also such a jumbled mess that it’s hard to be sure. But my hopeful guess is that he is finally looking for an overdue exit strategy, and his goal now is to agree to as many of Iran’s terms of ceasefire while obscuring the defeat as best as possible.
I’m hopeful this is a blustery move to look tough as the US forces capitulate and leave.

- Iran has opened a specific route of passage through the Strait of Hormuz
- The US is maintaining the blockade specifically on Iranian ports until certain conditions are met, including:
- the clearing of mines from the Strait, assisted by Iran
- something involving the transfer of unspecified nuclear materials from Iran to the US, although exactly what/when/how remains unclear
- likely other unmentioned conditions
- further negotiations

They’re just waiting for USA or Israel doing something stupid, most likely before the weekend is over, and then close things again blaming it all on Trump and/or Netanyahu.
Wouldn’t the continued blockade not be that thing? Why would Iran even agree to that?
I guess they figure the enitre world and his own party is now going to pressure Trump and nobody is watching Iran. They know it’s Trump who either has to chickens out or he has a tantrum quickly enough and then Iran has the political high ground.
