An Irish grandmother who has lived in the US for most of her life and holds a green card is facing deportation because she wrote a bad cheque for $25 in 2015.

Donna Hughes-Brown, 58, was detained in July after landing in Chicago on a flight from Dublin and is being held in isolation in a detention centre in Kentucky. She has lived in the US since 1977, has five children and grandchildren, and ran a horse farm in Troy, Missouri.

Her husband, Jim Brown, a US citizen and military veteran, told reporters his wife was not a criminal and that he “100%” regretted voting for Donald Trump as president.

Brown, who served in the navy and marines for decades, said he had supported Trump’s promise to deport “criminal illegal immigrants” but that federal authorities were targeting other people to reach quotas.

You look at the news, and they’re not telling the truth about what’s actually happening to a lot of legal immigrants. What’s bad is that Trump is so demeaning to people, and he’s so condescending and so retaliatory that people are afraid to say anything.”

Trump supporter shocked to find out that “the news” that told them to support trump isn’t honest about trump…

Like, I think it’s a safe bet that everyone who voted trump watches anything that doesn’t just suck his nuts 24/7

Next Week, after watching OAN, Newsmax & Fox:

He gazed up at the enormous face. Eight years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath that orange bronzer. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two whiskey-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved The Trumpster.

Fuck you, Jim Brown, you selfish, inhuman piece of shit. You were fine voting for fascism when you thought you’d benefit. Now that it affects you and you find out you’re just as worthless to them as everyone else suddenly you have regrets.

There was a reporter talking to him. Does it occur to the reporters to dig deeper into the regret? Maybe point out that he was fine with this until it affected people he cared about? Maybe ask him if it would perhaps make sense to treat everyone like they are human beings instead of only the people in your family?

So yes dig deeper in that regret but do it with the right kind of questions. Because those are just self-gratification questions that won’t get any real answer. Maybe ask him what he would tell his fellow Americans that voted for Trump.

He said she had been detained on a misdemeanour relating to a $25 cheque she signed a decade ago and for which she made restitution and received probation.

I work retail and can’t stand it when people write checks, but even I think deportation is a little much.

What is with the excessive backbending to always make white women the victim?

      It’s infantalizing and sexist.

She’s a 58 year old adult woman who has been married for decades, but you think she was just too fucking stupid to realize her husband is an asshole till now?

Like, you just can’t imagine a white woman living in America married to a trump supporter is also a racist piece of shit trump supporter?

55% of white women voted trump in 2025, more than a few understood what they were voting for

        This.

It’s the whole idea of “Leopards ate my face.”

They voted for Leopards, knowing the plan was to eat faces, but never imagined that the Leopard would actually eat their face.

It’s always fine as long as it happens to someone else. If the wrong type of person makes a mistake, it’s unforgivable and they deserve it, but if I make a mistake, I obviously had a good reason and the Leopards will know that.

If you decide not to become a citizen and stay a green card holder for decades because you wish to return to the motherland one day don’t be surprised when the government will help you fulfill those wishes. I don’t get why many migrants across the world don’t want to become a citizen of the country they’ve lived in for decades. Non-citizens are always the first victims the moment the country moves towards authoritarianism.

Some countries make it really hard to give up citizenship. It took my husband 15 years, 3 lawyers and a lot of money. He started the process as soon as he turned 18 because he wanted citizenship of the country he lives in, but his country of birth did everything to slow down the process. Some countries also don’t have a working beaurocracy.

Don’t think that’s the case for Ireland, but I know several stories like that.

Taxes. If they want to move back after becoming a citizen they’ll have to pay usa income tax for 10 years even if they renounce usa citizenship, or forever if they don’t renounce.

I live in the Netherlands I know some migrants who have lived here most their lives and still haven’t naturalized. The tax thing doesn’t apply here we don’t have citizenship based taxes
