State leaders are going their own way in making vaccine policies this fall — which means your ability to get a COVID-19 shot may soon depend on where you live.

New York has declared a “statewide disaster emergency” to preserve access to COVID vaccines. Massachusetts is making insurers pay for vaccines recommended by the state and not solely those recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. New Mexico is taking steps to ensure that pharmacists can continue to give out vaccines.

Some states are banding together to form regional health coalitions. Oregon, Washington, California and Hawaii have formed the West Coast Health Alliance to coordinate their vaccine recommendations. States in the Northeast are considering a public health collaboration.

Heads up. “Third world” is a fairly shitty term to use and always has been. It never actually referred to the level of development of a nation and was actually based on whether it was a First World (US and NATO) or a Second World (USSR and Warsaw Pact) aligned country.

Global North and Global South are more accurate terms that are based on the level of development and infrastructure in a nation. There is still a LOT of shitty connotations to that (and the reason the planet is so divided on that line is a whole different mess) but it at least conveys the meaning.

I would assume that everyone understands what is meant with “3rd world country”, unlike “global south county”. If anything, we could use “developing county”.

Sure, the Global Noth that includes Australia and New Zealand, such a clear definition because geography is the reason rather than a history of genocide, pillage, slavery and other sins of colonialism

Versus third world nations that don’t include North Korea but DO include fricking Sweden.

Like I said, it is still a shitty term. But it is at least one built around the idea of development rather than imperialism.
