The institution in Maryland was placed on lockdown after a former student made threats online that appeared as though they were on campus, a source said.

A law enforcement officer shot a student at the U.S. Naval Academy on Thursday during a lockdown that was prompted by online threats from someone who had been kicked out of the institution, a source said.

The shooting on the Annapolis, Maryland, campus occurred after the midshipmen, which is what all students at the academy are called, mistook a responding law enforcement officer for a threat and struck the officer with a parade rifle used for training, the source said.

The student the law enforcement officer shot was hospitalized and is expected to be OK, the source said.

    There’s something missing here.

Threat causes lockdown. Students bonk a law enforcement person with a parade rifle. Law enforcement shoots a student. There’s not a line that really connects these.

Speculation: Locked down students see a plainclothes officer probably holding a gun. Thinking the officer was the threat, they bonk him.

Officer doesn’t realize it was a parade rifle, takes a shot.

Keystone fucking cops, I tell you hwat.

Man, that cadet rocks, they put a parade rifle to use to combat who they perceived as the active shooter threat. Think about the balls that took, they had to make that choice in a split second and they chose to take action in defense of others with a fucking parade rifle. They took an M1 Garand to work, even after it’s barrel was drilled.

    Mad respect, F7, 8/10

OK so if I am reading that correctly… the student pumped the officer in the face/ribcage with the butt of a non-functional rifle. So the cop shot the student.

That student fucking earned his war story. “Yeah I cracked a cop in the face with a rifle and then he shot me but I survived because the cop was a pussy”

Shouldn’t MPs be the ones at the Naval Academy? Why would a regular, plain clothes, cop even be there?

There are federal officers and contracted security personnel on many bases. Additionally, in a domestic threat situation, sometimes they coordinate with local law enforcement. There was a false alarm on the air force academy about ten years ago and cspd, along with the sheriff’s office, were part of the clearing effort.

I would bet money the former student was using a VPN to “appear as though the IP was on-campus” and the account has just been neglected to be disabled.
